Sipping a tasty beer and watching this small town brewery grow in front of my eyes.
Local
Stumbled upon this place driving through town trying to find food. Looks like the place grows their own hops and the beer is amazing. Nice guy working at the counter.
Over the recent Memorial Day Weekend I was birding in Harney County, Oregon and I had the opportunity to try my second and third offerings from this wonderful "nano brewery." I live in Portland, Oregon, land of hop crazy brewmasters. Locally-brewed IPAs tend to too bitter for my taste. When I went into the Frenchglen Hotel, one of the few outlets where one can find Steens Mountain Brewing beers, I found that they had two–the Lone Pine American IPA and the Basque Amber Ale. I bought one of each, which I shared with my wife over the next two days. We had the Amber Ale first. It was more richly-colored and full-bodied than I expected, a pleasant surprise. The aftertaste was quite pleasing with none of the lingering bitterness of overly-hopped Portland brews. Not being a fan of IPAs, I had some trepidation when we uncapped the American IPA. It was exquisite. It was more crisp and tangy than the Amber Ale and I liked it more than the Amber Ale. The color was in a word, spectacular, with taste to match.
